Monday marks the start of Fairtrade Fortnight – an annual event that encourages us all to think about the origins of our food, and the circumstances of the people who produce it.

You’re probably used by now to seeing the Fairtrade mark on food products like tea, coffee, bananas, and chocolate, or on the labels of some cotton clothing. It’s been in use since 1994 to demonstrate that what you are buying represents a fair deal for the people producing it.
This means that farmers in the developing world get fair access to makrets and trade conditions that allow them to make a decent living – meeting the Fairtrade Foundation’s goals of poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
To celebrate this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight the foundation is asking supporters to shout about Fairtrade products. You can get some ideas for taking part here.
Development charity Oxfam is a big supporter of Fairtrade, stocking a host of products on its website.
